Spring Term - 2016

KS2 Spanish Lessons

We are delighted to welcome Señorita Ángela Ocaña Jacinto to our school this year. She is working as an au pair in the area and has joined us in order to gain some Primary School teaching experience, to help her in her studies when she returns to Spain.  She is assisting in the teaching of Key Stage 2 Spanish and is running the current Lunchtime Language Club for the Year 2s alongside Mrs Jackson on Fridays.

Comberton Village College - Language Leaders Visit

In February 2016, the Language Leaders came from Comberton to teach the Years 3 and 4.  Two groups of Leaders came along and taught the children about animals and things in the pencil case. What struck us in particular on this occasion was the fact that one of the Leaders was a past Barnabas Oley pupil, who led the sessions with great confidence and command. Her sister was among the Year 3 pupils they taught and it was lovely to see them interact.

Longsands - Language Leaders' Visit

Our January 2016, MFL Golden Time was run by the Language Leaders from Longsands in St Neots. They ran a fun session about animals and colours in both French and Spanish.  Children from the age of 5 to 11 worked alongside one another. As you can see from the photos, everyone had a lovely time and it was a great learning experience for all those involved.

Longsands have said they’d like to come back and were particularly impressed by the enthusiasm and language knowledge of the Barnabas Oley children.

Spanish Homework

This term Willow Class pupils, Cameron and Lewis, chose to do their homework in Spanish. Cameron wrote and illustrated his piece of homework, telling us all about his family. ¡Fenomenal!
Lewis shared his knowledge of Spanish colours by labelling this lovely drawing. Copies of their work can be seen displayed on the Languages Board in the main school corridor.

Spring Term - 2015

Language Leaders Visit

We had a visit from the Comberton Village College Year 9 Spanish Language Leaders on the 30th January 2015 for Golden Time. Twenty pupils signed up to a fun afternoon learning about Spanish colours, animals and some everyday Spanish phrases. The classroom was set up in a carousel fashion, so that everyone had a go at each 'lesson'. The Comberton students provided their own Powerpoint presentation, animal song and a variety of active games, which kept the pupils entertained for well over an hour. Here are the some of the comments from the Barnabas Oley pupils who took part:

  • It was more than good ... it was amazing!
  • It was really fun, thank you.
  • It was cooooooool!
  • This was the best Golden Time ever.
  • Loved it, learnt loads and would love you to come back again.
  • It was amazing.
  • It was so cool - please come back!
  • It was awesome and the most fun I've had learning for a long time.
  • Golden Time was amazing and I learnt lots!!!
  • It was great fun - loved it!

The feedback from the Comberton students was just as positive - they really enjoyed being involved in such a fun-filled language learning experience.

Spring Term - 2014

Ten Year 10 Language Leaders from Longsands Academy in St Neots visited on 24 March 2014, to teach the whole of Cedar Class for an hour. There were three lessons, two in German and one in French, which all three groups of pupils took part in as they moved round the classroom.

In German, a language completely new to most of them, they learnt how to say which hobbies they liked, loved or didn't like doing. This was a very lively lesson with miming and enthusastic participation from everyone. The Language Leaders had prepared a Powerpoint presentation to help present their lesson and they also wrote words on the board to reinforce learning. Another group of Leaders taught pupils about farm animals in German. Again, they had prepared Powerpoint slides.

They played games in teams and started designing their own farm, which they took home to finish. The design can then be handed in before the Easter holidays so that they can be judged by the Language Leaders. A prize will be awarded after Easter.

The French topic was colours and animals, with which some of the children were already familiar, so they were able to show off their knowledge of French.

Lots of stickers and awards were handed out in the course of the afternoon. Despite the length of the afternoon's activities, none of the children flagged at all and were focused throughout. It was a great learning opportunity for both Cedar class and the Language Leaders.

They would like to return next term, hopefully for a Golden Time, so that children from all age groups can take part.

Autumn Term - 2013

The Year 6 pupils took part in a French food tasting session. They sampled a variety of foods, said in French whether they liked them or not and filled in a survey, giving the food marks out of 10.
